The Great Crested Grebe is 46-51 cm long with a 59-73 cm wingspan. It is an excellent swimmer and diver, and pursues its fish prey underwater. The adults are unmistakable in summer with head and neck decorations. In winter, this is whiter than most grebes, with white above the eye, and a pink bill. It is the largest European grebe.

The young are remarkable because their heads are striped black and white, much like zebras. They lose these markings when they become adults.

Hi Alex,

welcome aboard TN with your pictures. You start with a great one. It's a rare sight, the Grebe with the young. The composition is very good, you had excellent light. Technically there are things to watch: sharpness, cropping the end off are at issue here. Please write notes, so we get an idea of what you were up against. Thanks for presenting the shot on TN.

goedemiddag alex

ik vind deze foto erg mooi
met de jongen traditioneel op de rug.
door de "boeggolfjes" zit er beweging en vaart in de foto.
de compositie wordt daardoor erg mooi
(een wig in een rechthoek.)

ik kijk uit naar meer foto's, ok?

This one is really nice. I often tried to capture how the old grebes carry their young ones, but it is difficult to get it sharp. You managed to do this nicely. It is a pity that part of the bird is cut off but it is still a great photo.
