Kori Bustard ( Ardeotis kori)

This picture was taken in Kruger in May 2008, close to Satara. It was a fantastic trip, one of the best that I've had in Kruger.

The Kori Bustard is a large bird native to Africa. It is a member of the bustard family. It may be the heaviest bird capable of flight, although this title may also belong to the similarly-dimensioned Great Bustard.

The Kori Bustard is mostly grey in color, with a black crest on its head and yellow legs. Kori Bustards are often found with bee-eaters riding on their backs as they stride through the grass. The bee-eaters make the most of their walking perch by hawking insects from the bustard's back that are disturbed by the bustard's wandering.

This is a large and heavy bird, and avoids flying if possible. It spends most of its time on the ground, foraging for the seeds and lizards which make up most of its diet.

The male Kori Bustard averages at about 110 cm (3.7 feet) in length and stands 60-90 cm (2-3 ft) tall. An average male bird would weigh about 12.4 kg (26-27 lb), but exceptional birds may weigh over 20 kg (44 lb). A report exists of a 34 kg (75 lb) bird, but it is not verified and must be beheld with skepticism because it so much heavier than any other recorded weight for a Kori Bustard. The female Kori Bustard averages 5.7 kg (11 lb) and is usually 20% shorter than a male.

Like all bustards, Kori Bustards have polygynous breeding habits, where one male displays to attract several females and mates with them all. He then leaves the females to care for the young by themselves. The females build a nest on the ground and incubate the eggs, foregoing eating for days. When the chicks hatch, the mother brings them a steady stream of food, most of it soft so the chicks can eat it easily.

Hello Jan
What an interesting one-tone image - brown, and more brown.
Very good capture of the Kori Bustard, showing us how is can camouflage into the African scene. I am amazed at the size of the bird too. And I do like his pose,
Well captured and thank you for sharing
Janice

Hi Jan,

This is a stunning study in shades of brown! This Bustard is so well camouflaged and yet it stands out beautifully on the screen. I love the pose - he looks quite proud of himself. Details of the face, neck and plummage are outstanding. A very well designed bird.

Hi Jan.
Thanks for kind comments and visit as well as thanks for so wonderful shot. I like it a lot. You managed to show all beauty of the bird and scenery. Superb DOF, great details of the Kori Bustard, all parts of the fine bird is reproduced perfectly. I like back POV and nice turn of the bird. Dry grass are reflected so nicely as main subject. Combination of sharpness and blurriness is excellent. You have used your perfect lens (and camera) very well. I also like blameless composition and framing of the image. Well done and kind regards.

Hello Jan,
Being not a bird specialist, I'm especially sensitive to the light and the earth-tones of your picture. Beside that it's an excellent composition too and I like the bird's attitude. Well seen.
Best regards
Anne

Ciao Jan,
splendida cattura, eccellenti POV e composizione con la bella postura e lo stupendo OOF BG che mette in risalto questo bellissimo uccello nonostante le tonalità monocromatiche per un perfetto mimetismo, ottima definizione, magnifici i colori.
Grazie e complimenti.
Maurizio

Hello Jan,
What a splendid capture of this beautiful Kori Bustard in a lovely pose. Great focus on the eye and excellent sharpness. Beautíful light and colours too. It looks as if you got pretty close! Well done!
TFS and regards, Ulla

Hi JanHendrik - you caught this bird in a perfect position to show off his pride. Well done.

Hello Jan,
First of all I do like that specific savanna color. That yellowish. As if the image is almost edited in 'sepia':-).
Secondly I verified the drawing in the Kruger map and your photo is almost a copy; some kind of 'attitude' these big fellows have.
Big indeed, I photographed the smaller Black-bellied bustard almost half its size and not a small bird after all.
Finally it is a very good photo espcially in terms of depth of field and car-POV;-). Satara offers a lot more than there lions apparently:-) hence this safe pic.
Well done
TFS

Hi Jan Hendrik

Hi Jan

I've just revisited you gallery again and i must say it is full of outstanding shot. Unfortunately, i have little time nowadays and won'y be able to congratulate you on each of them...so i'm doing it here: BRAVO!

This too is a lovely capture, one with amazing light! The angle of it and the warmth are superb and create a gorgeous mood and saturation for the scene.
Further more, the pose and DOF are great, the sharpness is impeccable and the composition is very beautiful.

Bravo, again, and TFS
