[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I took this shot yesterday at 6 30 PM. Polyommatus icarus is one of the most common European butterflies and it is also very often presented on TN. So this time no note about the butterfly but some tips associated with butterfly photos. My tips are not technical tips associated with camera use but just some kind of photographer behavior ;-) Nothing special just few obvious things.


Weather and time of the day

- Cloudy days. Even cold summer days (even after rain) are good for butterfly shots – sometimes even better, butterflies are slower and easier to observe and the light is better (it is especially good weather for Pieridae and other butterflies with white wings. On sunny days there are often problems with exposure.)

- Early mornings and evenings (butterflies are sitting peacefully on grasses and leafs – perfect, patient models. You could find mostly Lycaenidae, Pieridae, Satyrinae and also some small Nymphalidae like frittilaries. And of course the light is beautiful.

- When you are taking photos on sunny day you can take an umbrella with you or (while taking the photo) try to do a shadow on butterfly using your left hand to avoid a strong light effect.

Moves of photographer

- Don’t chase the butterfly, try to walk slowly and observe the object. Remember that most butterflies fly often in the same part of the meadow. When you are patient the butterfly will come back and you will find the opportunity to take a good shot.

- When you are close and ready to take the photo try to move as slowly as you can (no rapid moves). Sometimes when it is possible it is better to lie down on your knees or just seat. And remember - try not to breathe on butterfly ;-)

- Get a good grip. When the object is sitting in short grasses you can use your elbows ;-)

Once ore amazing picture of the cute butterfly. In this case I am impressed with fantastic of beautifulness BG. Lights, colouration and smoothness of it are spot on. Image of the insect is blameless. What a original and beautiful capture!
I really like the way you took this shot, with a spot-on exposure setting to get the best details out of the butterfly but also keep that lovely light in the BG. I think that such photos are rare but also very attractive!
That aside, the composition is very nice and the colors are gorgeous.
