[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Just got back from a trip Wildwood and captured this photo of the American Lotus seed pods in various stages of development. I liked overall effect of the photo and so I present it here. These were some distance out into the Lotus choked lake so I had to take the photo with a fully extended 12X zoom. I did not have a tripod along so it was taken hand-held. All were turned toward the early morning sunlight.

Nelumbo lutea

American lotus is a perennial plant that is often confused with water lilies. Leaves are simple, round, bluish-green in color, up to 2 feet in diameter, attached to the stem in center (no slit like water lilies). Leaves are flat if floating or conical if emergent and can stand above the water’s surface as high as 3 1/2 feet on the rigid stem. Flowers are large (to 10 inches across) yellowish-white to yellow with more than 20 petals. The center of the flower, the seed structure, is cone-shaped (or like an inverted shower-head) and has openings in which the seeds develop. Lotus can form large colonies and spreads by seeds and large fleshy rhizomes.

Submerged portions of all aquatic plants provide habitats for many micro and macro invertebrates. These invertebrates in turn are used as food by fish and other wildlife species (e.g. amphibians, reptiles, ducks, etc.). After aquatic plants die, their decomposition by bacteria and fungi provides food (called "detritus") for many aquatic invertebrates. The large acorn like seeds of lotus are utilized by some ducks and other wildlife. Beavers and muskrats will consume the rhizomes.

Very interesting image as I do not think we have these plants here. You have shown us good detail of the plant with surprisingly good DoF for F4.

Hi Larry,
nice to see this photo of yours because it gives name to a dried plant I have seen numerous times as a decorative item in floral arrangements in people's homes.I know what lotus flowers look like and I must say they are very beautiful indeed and now that I have seen these seed pods,well they are attractive as well,no small wonder why you photoed them.The only critique I can offer is that you blew the highlights on the shot.To correct that problem stop your camera down a little or use a 1/3 or 2/3 -ev ,assuming your camera gives you that kind of control.A wonderful textural image and thank you for sharing. Hi Larry,

These seed pods are fascinating and beautiful. It's wonderful that you found two different colored ones. Sharp, sharp details and a beautiful composition. Is there a Wildwood Pa or did you go to the Jersey shore? If the latter you are bringing back memories of years ago when we used to take our three boys there. I can still remember having delicious lobster thermidor which seems to have disappeared from menus over the years.

Lovey composition and color, larry.

It seems, however, that the picture was too much sharpened, and that some areas are too close to saturation. That may be corrected form you originl. Nevertheless, this is a very enjOyable PICTURE.

Hi Larry. Most unusual seed heads. You were lucky to get them at different stages develement. Interesting shapes and colours. they would make good dried flowers. TFS.inetersting notes .

Hello Larry,
I've seen many Lotus flowers but I can't recall having seen the seed heads which are really very beautiful too. Excellent capture showing them at different stages of maturing.
Fine details and beautiful colours.

superbds clarity in excellent soft and subtle green.
Lighting is brilliantly exploited and it gives deep sense of
