Hi Paul, here is the second angle on the hoverfly. I know it isn't much different to the first one but I thought it was worth posting anyway. Sorry to take so long about it. I got caught up in the blue tit activity and I've been trying to catch up on my gardening - wonder why I'm so behind with it this year ;).

I'll also be posting an image of a cranefly/scorpion fly/snipe fly type beastie soon. It doesn't present itself clearly to me as either of these but I'm running a bet on cranefly....but that is for later.

This shot was handheld and ISO 800 in the late afternoon. We get lots of hoverflies in the garden in fact they were one of the first species of anything wild to arrive. I can't post anything informational about this particular species of hoverfly as I don't yet know which species it is. If it is Eupeodes Luniger (as I suspect it might be) then I still might not be able to post anything very useful as I've searched both my books and the net and not come up with very much - mind you, it might also be because this is *way* past my bedtime!

Thanks Hollie, nice shot. Lovely details especially on the eyes. The composition is good too. I think you are right on Eupeodes, but I'm still not sure of the species. Very well done.

Beautiful shot, Hollie, amazingly clear for ISO 800. I'm impressed with the 20D.

Very good picture, with a lot of details adn overall very pleasing, especially the POV.
I agree with Paul on Eupeodes (Metasyrphus) and I would venture to suggest a male E. corollae...

This is a wonderful composition Hollie. Very detailed image with fine background and magnificent colours.
Very well done.

Wow, great shot. Very good details, love the contrast in colours between the fly, the BG and the flower. Seeing him this close, i realise how hairy they are.

Hollie, This has good detail and sharpness for ISO 800. Colorful frame. Personally I would not shoot an insect hand-held at 1/30th & ISO 800 but you have pulled it off well here. Good job!
