Great Blue Heron
Ardea herodias

Description:

39-52" (99-132 cm). W. 5'10" (1.8 m). A common large, mainly grayish heron with a pale or yellowish bill. Often mistaken for a Sandhill Crane, but flies with its neck folded, not extended like that of a crane. In southern Florida an all-white form, "Great White Heron," differs from Great Egret in being larger, with greenish-yellow rather than black legs.

Habitat:

Lakes, ponds, rivers, and marshes.

Nesting:

3-7 pale greenish-blue eggs placed on a shallow platform of sticks lined with finer material, usually in a tree but sometimes on the ground or concealed in a reedbed. Nests in colonies.

Range:

Breeds locally from coastal Alaska, south-central Canada, and Nova Scotia south to Mexico and West Indies. Winters as far north as southern Alaska, central United States, and southern New England. Also in Galapagos Islands.

A harsh squawk.

Good capture with excellent sharpness, colours and light. Nice details and pose. However, I would have liked a bit more space at the bottom so as to allow space for his feet - even though you wouldn't be able to see them, anyway.

Hello Gregory, very nice shot of this Heron, they look alot like our grey herons. Good colours, composition and details but as Bente said some space below would have been good. Nice work, well done.

It's a magnificent capture.Colors,details,lighting,BG and composition are excellent.TFS...:-)

Nice composition, sharp detail and good colours with as Perro Correia said a Geo or National Geographic quality. However, I would have cloned out the twig that runs parallel to the legs and the brown round spots in the water.

Great one again! Though here is not so much light (as it seems to me), you have succeeded very well in bringing out colors and details. Sharp as usual and composition is also good.
