Friends,

Thanks to Dany13 our TN friend for identifing this picture. I wish once again all the TN members once again Happy Deepavali.

Ganesh

The Common Evening Brown (Melanitis leda) is a common species of butterfly found flying at dusk. The flight of this species is erratic. They are found in South Asia and South-east Asia extending to parts of Australia

Dry Season Form

Fore wing : apex obtuse and more or less falcate; termen posterior to falcation straight or sinuous. Upperside: ground-colour similar to that in the wet-season form, the markings, especially the ferruginous lunules inwardly bordering the black sub-apical spots on fore wing, larger, more extended below and above the black costa. Hind wing : the ocellus in interspace 2 absent, posteriorly replaced by three or four minute white subterminal spots.

Underside varies in colour greatly. Antennae, head, thorax and abdomen in both seasonal forms brown or greyish brown: the antennae annulated with white, ochraceous at apex.

The Melanitis was there among dead leaves, its wings folded and looking for all the world a dead, dry leaf itself. With regard to Melanitis, I have not seen it recorded anywhere that the species of this genus when disturbed fly a little way, drop suddenly into the undergrowth with closed wings, and invariably lie a little askew and slanting, which still more increases their likeness to a dead leaf casually fallen to the ground.

Resident butterflies are known to fight off visitors to the area during dusk hours.

Hi Ganesh

Great shot of this evening brown, a species I get here in Australia too. Good low down POV and sharpness. Pity for that annoying leaf in the foreground, but that;s nature for you.

Hello narayanan,

What a fine image you are showing! There are so many color tones in your photo showing in a good manner the butterfly. Even more the texture of the wings can be well observed due to the extreme sharpness of the image. This is encreased even more by the blurry background.

Congratulations,
Cristian

Hi Ganesan.
Common for you and uncommon for our places beauty. Very impressive POV and framing as well as colouration and other details of the butterfly. Light colourful BG decorates the butterfly image so perfectly. Once more wonderful shot from you. Thanks and best wishes.

Hi Ganesh

A lovely sharp macro of this Common Evening Brown. I am very happy for you that you received help on the ID.

I know we (nature photographers) sometimes grovel in the dirt to get a specific shot, but I think diving into a dustbin for a butterfly sure takes the cake (chuckle). Have you perhaps seen the series of "Dirty Jobs" on the Discovery channel? Maybe this is a qualifier… Don't worry; I'm just pulling your leg.

The brightish BG is well OOF and it compliments the darker butterfly very well. The exposure was well controlled and the colours are lovely. Enjoy your festivities and don't forget to make my yawner smile (chuckle).

Good work and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Btw. I'll be off the site for a week or so as I must go to hospital (tomorrow) to have an "incisional hernia" repaired on my abdominal wall. See you around later my friend.

Gannu, Happy Deepavali to you and family. This is a good one. Looks like, you have gone down to ground level to shoot this. I wonder why the Common Brown is in this avatar during the monsoon season.

- Murali Santhanam

Happy Deepavai to you too, Ganesan!
I have had intimate brush with Common Evening Brown this year in the sense that it once came inside my office at sat on a roof light for hours. It likes shady places and I was able to shoot it without much difficulty. I saw one the other day, lying dead on the ground.
Your picture of its lower wings is very good.
It is a dry season form, apparently.
Thanks and regards.

Hello Ganesh,
Amazing behaviour and mimicry of this special shaped butterfly. I really would like to see this butterfly dropping on dead leaves, it must be almost impossible to see it. Very fine close-up and interesting posting,
Thanks so much
Anne

Hi Ganesh,
I seem to have missed this excellent picture. Very interesting looking butterfly you are showing us. Good POV and composition, pin sharp details.
