Somatochlora metallica (Van der Linden, 1825)
Brilliant Emerald

The Brilliant Emerald is probably the commonest Emerald in Europe. Its range stretches from Northern Scandinavia down to France and Northern Italy. Unfortunately it doesn't reach Central Italy, and so we've only come across this species on our travels. Somatochlora metallica is a medium-sized dragonfly and - in terms of its behaviour - a typical Emerald species; it's a tireless flier and will hardly ever settle down for a rest. The species' distinguishing features include its entirely metallic-green body and the female's exceedingly long vulvar scale, which sits at a 90-degree angle to the abdomen.

Hi Sergio,
you had wonderful luck to find it.
I love this dragon - also saw the same in Italy some years ago, they are like glittering jewels. Thanks and ciao

Hi Sergio.
Wonderful idea and excellent picture. I welcome your cropping of the scene and impressive presentation of dragonfly wing pattern. Amazing sharpness and details, well looking smooth BG, attractive right symmetrical composition. Well done and TFS.
Alexei.
P.S. By the way. I like small aperture value at macro shooting. Did you try other aperture values for comparition?

Hi Sergio,

a very nice close-up of this dragonfly.

one mention... this is not Cordulia aenea, this can be seen very easy from this photo because there are two cross veins between triangle and hindwing base (some are from the wing ;)). also C.aenea don't have that coloration on first abdominal segments.

is impossible to give you a full ID from this view. but if you have a lateral shot i can give you a 100% full name. also with a wider view (to see the tip of wings) will reach 90%. for now i can just say that is a female of Somatochlora metallica or S.meridionalis.

if you have some more photo please add them as a workshop.

TFS this,
cosmln

Ciao Sergio, bella simmetrica, magnifico il mosaico dell ali, peccato che dalle mie parti le libellule siano poco frequenti, mi consolo vedendo le tue che sono splendide, bravo, ciao Silvio

Hello Sergio,

You have made an unteresting close-up of this insect showing the structure of the wings. I like the way light reflects on wings surface. The colored background beneath the wings looks well.

Thank you for sharing,
Cristian

Hi Sergio

A very beautiful and original macro!
I rally like the focus on the wings here...most photos concentrate on the head or body of a dragonfly...you were original here and took advantage of the beautiful mosaic of it's "cells".
Great POV and excellent use of the shallow DOF.

Bravo and TFS
Horia
