[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This little fellow (on the other hand, I just learned she is a female actually), I found yesterday on the door of my garage. She wouldn't sit still though (go figure) until she finally jumped down to the sandy ledge right before the door. There, she perked upwards and allowed me to take numerous shots of her face to face.

This is a Marpissa Muscosa, or jumping spider. They are sunlovers and can be found anywhere on grass, stone or other sundrenched places in Europe.

Marpissa Muscosa is one of the largest jumping spiders, up to 11mm they grow (she seemed a lot bigger!!).

As you can see she's got really big eyes, and the ones you see are not all she has. She's got two pairs on top of her head actually, and combined with the two pairs on front she has 360 degrees vision. She can spot prey 40cm away, can see color, and can use her eyes as some kind of scanning device (they are singular, unlike many insects have, btw).

I took this shot with an additional macro lense on my Canon Powershot G5. I didn't PP much, only cropped with Photoshop 7.0 (I've got a better cropped version but can't upload right now).

Welcome to TN

Nice fhoto Wendy. A litle bit soft, not to sharp. Good notes.
TFS.

Welcome Lyanna
Good picture to begin.

They are very cute spiders. The more you shoot them, the more you will have a liking for them.
Beautiful capture and well done on the composition and details.
I have some, you'll have to go through a mile of pics, they are there. ;)

Excellent work.

Mike

This depth of field is so fun here, Wendy, with the focus only on the eyes. I love the bokeh effect in the background, too.

Very nice. Mike (Fisher) and I and proabbly several other TNers are addicted to jumping spiders. Welcome to the club!
Amazing how they would look you in the eyes, when they feel threatened.

Hi Wendy, I'm another jumping spider enthusiast. This is probably my favourite species in UK, mainly because they are the largest Salticidae member we have, which makes photographing them a little easier. Nice view of the eyes, I would have liked a little more DOF but you focussed on the right bit!

Well done.
