Hello Friends,
this is my first amphibian in TN.

Painted Kaloula (kaloula taprobanica)

Size:40mm

Identification: A medium sized stout microhylid, immediately distinguished from all other Indian frogs and toads except Ramanella in having only the finger tips dilated into discs. Distinguished from Ramanella by the presence of bony ridges immediately below choanae. Head short, rounded with indistinct canthus rostralis, interorbital space broader than upper eyelid: fingers with well-developed truncate discs which are twice wide as the last phalange, toes about one third webbed; two strong compressed meta tarsal tubercles; tibio-tarsal articulation reaches to the shoulder.

Colouration:
colour pattern is distinctive, with blackish brown and bright red areas. A wide median blackish brown area bordered by two dorsalateral bands of red and narrow interorbital band of red. In addition, there are spots and patches of red within the black pattern. Light grey below, spotted or marbled with brown. Chin and throat black in breeding male.

Habitat, distribution and Status:
Assam, Bengal,Gujarat,Karnataka,Tamilnadu and Srilanka.

Habits: Very little information is available on the habits of this microhylid. Breeding habits unknown but they have been observed in copula in temporary rainwater pools in May at Dandeli. The call has been recorded as shriller than that of the smaller Ramenella Montana.

This was captured at a height of 1.5m from the ground on a mango tree.

Hello Vral,
A superb first capture of an amphibian!! You show details and colours very sharply and it looks like a very unusual and interesting species! Good use of the flash and I love its pose on the tree trunk. A good note too!

A nice capture of this beautiful microhylid frog. Excellent sharp details and a lovely composition. But I think the BG is a bit noisy. I made a WS. Hope you will like. Thanks a lot for sharing this new species of frog.

I really like this picture for the colours, POV and most of all the species! I used to see these guys in my backyard during the rains - especially in a tree-hole on a 'sapota' tree.
