N.tazetta. Plant with several narrow glaucous lvs. to 30 cm and 1 or more lowering stems arising from an ovoid bulb 3-4 cm long, and enveloped in a basal sheath 5-7 cm long; fls. 2-5 in an umbel, their stalks emerging from a tubular, papery spathe, split above. Perianth tube greenish, the 6 segments white, the short cup-shaped corona yellow, wavy-edged. Capsule oblong, 3-angled, to 1.5cm long.F1.Nov-Feb. Occasionally as a cornfield weed (Dikmen) but usu. is garigue or limestone cliff fissures, at several places along the nothern strip.
Widespread in the Medit.; cultivated in temperate climes worldwide. A long lasting cut flower, used by gardeners for centuries in the development of improved strains. The essential oil has also been used in the treatment of bronchitis, and the bulb as a emetic.
