Virginia state tree & flower: Dogwood

This is one of the dogwoods in our back yard which have sprung from their wintry slumber.
I don't know where this thought originated, but I have always thought that it was illegal in the state of Virginia to cut down a Cornus florida since it is the state tree as well as the state flower. But I looked and couldn't find anything to back it up. Perhaps an urban legend? |
