The Scarce Swallowtail (Iphiclides podalirius) is a butterfly found in gardens, fields and open woodlands. It is found in places with sloe thickets and particularly orchards. It is also called Sail Swallowtail or Pear-tree Swallowtail. is widespread throughout Europe with the exception of the northern parts. Its range extends northwards to Saxony and central Poland and eastwards across Asia Minor and Transcaucasia as far as the Arabian peninsula, India, and western China. A few specimens of the Scarce Swallowtail have been reported from central Sweden and the UK but they were probably only strays and not migrants. The scarcity of UK migrants is responsible for the English common name. In the Alps it can be found up to altitudes of 1600 m.In some years the Scarce Swallowtail is quite abundant. The Scarce Swallowtail is getting rarer as the blackthorn bushes are being cleared; and it is now protected in some central European countries. It is protected by law in Czech republic, Slovakia, Germany, Hungary, Luxembourg and Poland. It is considered Rare-Endangered and protected in some provinces of Austria and of status Indeterminate throughout Europe.


Il podalirio (Iphiclides podalirius LINNAEUS, 1758) è una farfalla diurna della famiglia dei Papilionidae.Ha una livrea giallo pallida, a fasce trasversali bruno-nerastre, a forma di V dirette verso l'angolo dell'ala anteriore. In alcune varietà il colore di fondo può essere bianco e le fasce essere di un nero marcato. Ha un'apertura alare di 6.5-8 cm. Le ali posteriori hanno delle macchie ocellate arancioni e azzurre e le code sono piuttosto allungate e scure.Può avere 2-3 generazioni annue. Il bruco ha una forma che ricorda una piccola limaccia, ha il corpo verde con linee gialle ed è spesso macchiato di rosso. Si sviluppa a spese di specie arbustive e Rosaceae (come Prunus spinosa e Crataegus monogyna).È una specie termofila con buona tendenza migratoria. Il volo avviene da marzo a settembre, nelle aree aperte e/o coltivate, ma provviste di copertura arboreo-arbustiva. La specie frequenta le foreste temperate e le pianure assolate fino a circa i 1700 m di quota, ma sta risentendo della rarefazione delle siepi in pianura. Diffusa in Europa, Africa settentrionale, Asia temperata e parte della Cina; in Italia è presente ovunque dalle zone di pianura a quelle montuose.

There is a common quality to these sub species which makes them somewhat easier to photograph...I can't find the words to explain...but in uniqueness they are not, so the perch and the framing become all important..also its nice to see one without much damage...quite nice...big right?

I love the diagonal composition of this Scarce Swallowtail. The opened win position is wonderful showing off the shape and beautiful markings. Excellent colors and details of the butterfly and the pretty flowers and leaves.

Bonjour Silvio,
Très belle prise que voilà. Le Flambé est un de mes papillons préférés, mais je n'ai jamais pu photographier un exemplaire sans défauts. Tu as ici eu la channce de croiser la perfection et en plus perché sur une petite fleur charmante.
