We took our annual trip by car to a nature reserve about 65 km (40 miles) SW of us. It consists mainly of wet meadows that are partly drained by ditches and it is managed by grazing cattle.
This is a nesting place for several species of wader, including Curlews

Eurasian Curlew (Numenius arquata)
Swedish name: Storspov

The delightful call and bubbling sounds that the Curlew makes is wonderful to hear and is one of the characteristics of the type of environment that we visited. This is where several pairs nest, the male doing most of the brooding after the female has laid her four large pair-shaped eggs. She is often the first to fly south to N. Africa and SW Europe to spend the winter along the coasts. Though some pairs stay together to look after the young until they can fly.

Like so many species dependent on this marshy habitat they have become rarer but are still relatively common in marshy areas along the N. Baltic coast.

This was taken in morning sunshine from the car window at a distance of about 20 meters (65 ft).

Meadow saxifrage (Saxifraga granulata)
Swedish name: Mandelblomma

This is a fairly common meadow flower pastures with limey soils that are unaffected by modern agriculture.

After moderate cropping and size reduction the image was selectively sharpened

Hi neighbour!
I had a gut feeling we would be neighbours today :).
This oven fresh picture of a Curlew is remarkable in one respect -- the subject is well integrated with the flowery plants on the meadow, which makes it the most authentic and natural setting.
And what a stupendous curving beak this bird has!
Superb clarity and perfect details.
Thanks and regards,
Ram

Ciao Ivan, lovely little bird in the flowers, splendid colors, excellent sharpness and fine details, very well done, have a good week end, ciao Silvio

what an excellent composition - the pretty flowers really hit the spot here! :-)
the way the low pov catches the pretty bird with its amazing long beak amidst the nice meadow is
terrific - and the "technical rest" is perfect as usual. wonderful job & best wishes, thor.

I believe that this is not easy to see this species among grasses. You have done very good work photographing this Eurasian Curlew in its natural habitat. I hope to see some of them during my trip to Scandinavia :>
All the best for you and Ulla!

Grass and flower carpet is simply amazing and image of the cute bird surrounding with them is looked perfectly. Remote and nicely blurred BG underlines the beautifulness of the main scene amazingly too. Well done and thanks for so nice natural picture. Have a nice weekend.

Hi Ivan,

An exceptionally beautiful picture! The Curlew is in a setting that is perfect for him. I love how all the colors blend and still the bird stands out so well. Razor sharp details of his face, eye, and fascinating plumage. Is there a bird with a longer beak than this?

Jane

Since the largest small village in my wilderness is named Curlew after this bird...and since it is such a delightful image...I ask if I could use this image for my friends who live in Curlew..to post it to my website for a day or two. A Curlew is a hard thing to capture and believe this....in Curlew only 2 people have claimed to see them and I'm not sure if they are dependable types...
Bob

A superb shot, Ivan...The OOF FG really sets off the sharply focused Curlew and the beautiful flowers!
Very well done, my friend!

very well done and have a good night
Jacqueline

Good Morning Ivan,

A delightfully composed shot of horizontal layers of differing colour tones and textures achieved by good dof. The curlew makes a wonderful focal point amongst the pretty spring flowers with its distinctive beak a sharp identifying feature.

I have heard their call on the moors near our village but have never been able to get close enough for a photograph.

Have a good day,
Bev :-)

Hi Ivan,

Superb Snap. Fantastic clarity and you caught it its perfect habitat. Nice work!
