Hi to all
Well, i've searched in the net for the identification of this guy (wich in fact i think it's a She, not a He)
In this region , Ribatejo, the snakes are a common view, but not in any way in this size (at least for me).
I found this animal crossing a road, and this is my best shot. It has at least 130cm lenght or even a litle bit more.
I have no positive id, but i think it's a specimen of "Cobra Rateira" (Malpolon monspessulanus). In the diet we can found mice, rabbits, small birds and even lizards. Can reach up 200cms or even more, ant can live until 2o years.
And finnaly it can be quite scary. |

Dear Helder,
Well caught snake; however it is unlikely to be cobra. It seems to be some non poisonous species; best is to refer the scae to Bayram for ID!
Best wishes-Subhash
Hello Helder! It is a Malpolon monspessulanus indeed, a western Montpellier Snake. Sure it's not a cobra but the "Cobra Rateira" is the locel name for this snake, cause it raise its head and widen its neck when it wants to scare you (defence position).
As soos as i see be written "cobra" came. :) But it was not. :) It doesn't matter, this is too very beauty snake
Regards
