Weedy species of Cirsium, Carduus, Echinops, Sonchus, and other plant genera of the family Asteraceae. The word thistle most often refers to prickly leaved species of Carduus and Cirsium, which have dense heads of small, usually pink or purple flowers. Plants of the genus Carduus, sometimes called plumeless thistles, have spiny stems and flower heads without ray flowers.

Full white the Bourbon lily blows,
And fairer haughty England's rose.
Nor shall unsung the symbol smile,
Green Ireland, of thy lovely isle.
In Scotland grows a warlike flower,
Too rough to bloom in lady's bower;
His crest. when high the soldier bears,
And spurs his courser on the spears.
O there it blossoms - there it blows
The thistle's grown aboon the rose.

I'm enjoying your wild flower shots as always! Excellent macro skills and thistles are beautiful also. I actually have a photo of a thistle but it has no fly attached unfortunately:)
Excellent depth of field also and perfect amount of light. Beautiful vibrant colours! Well done MF Bob!
TFS and Have an amusing WE!

Hi Bob. A happy independence day to you and Jane. This is a very colourful picture to brighten up my day. You have taken the flower heads with fine detail and rich colours. I like the ones in the BG being out of focus. well done TFs.

Bonjour Bob,
A very interesting plant for insects which you have taken with an original low point of view and against the blue sky what gives a colorful impression. The little insect you show is probably a fly. I have taken one with similar patterns on the wings lately. But I have to make some researches on ID.
Thanks and kind regards
Anne

Hi Bob!

Your series about the flowers is very pleasant, always also well accompanied by interesting notes. Here, the poem suits the subject very well. I akso like the simplicity of the flower, but I regret a little bit the centered position of the focussed one.

Kind regards

Markus

Hola Sr. Bob.
I have seen this "Carduus" here, they have such a beautiful pink color on flowers, but a lot of spines, it grows wild in places with a lot of mouiture, in fact I have a photo of them with an insect inside.
You did a great job here with Your excellent camera.

Ciao Bob, great view of splendid thistle in bloom, wonderful colors, beautiful light and excellent sharpness, very well done, ciao Silvio

Hello Robert,

The thistle is one of many plants we have in common!
They are attractive photo subject both because of fine colours and a bit different looks...
Over here they seem to be bumblebee magnets, so it is hard to photograph a thistle without getting a bee for bonus hehehe!

Greetings,
Pablo -

Hi Bob,

The macro view is showing the details and colors of the Thistle in bloom. The subject is well framed. The focus is set on the flowers in the foreground. The light is well managed and it is enhancing the colors. Have a nice day.

Pierre
