Another shot from my successful butterfly foray I made recently. This is the Silver-washed Fritillary (Argynnis paphia). This butterfly is normally found in woodland clearings, rides and margins - where the Viola foodplant of the caterpillar also grows. The adult is very fond of bramble flowers. I have found the best way to get close is to find a bramble patch where they are feeding, keep still and wait. They will get used to you and will often land very close. 2009 seems to have been a favourable year for this species in the UK - I have seen more than any other year I can recall. I believe this is due to a fine spell of weather in April which allowed the overwintered larvae to feed up and mature successfully.

Although the outside of the wings are not as colourful as the bronzy inside, I still like the subtle patterns in this image. The shot has been lightly cropped and sharpened.

Kind Regards

Vinny www.vincentblood.com

PS - thank you to all the TN members who made such positive comments on the Burnet picture I posted yesterday. I'd not had the best day at work and it really cheered me up! ;p

Wonderful shot of this lovely silver-washed Fritillary butterfly!
Good control on sharpness with well-chosen POV and good DOF. The eyes and wings of the butterfly are just awesome. The blurred BG is just awesome. Great work!

Hello Vinny.
This is a very nice macro photo, with great angle which allows a clear view of the scene. Nice details and texture too.
Congrtulations.
I think that lowering a bit yellow saturation, you would win some other colours and would get the butterfly out of this strong and colourful BG.
Thanks and regards, Felipe.

Hello Vinny,
A fine closed-wing cpture of a Silver-washed Fritillary taken from an ideal POV to show the underside of the wings with excellent sharpness and detail and the lighting nicely shows contours of the wings to remind us that they are not as flat as those set specimens in collections.
Nice composition on the bramble flowers against a fine neutral natural BG.
Thanks and best wishes,
Ivan
