Velvet Foot Mushrooms, a.k.a. Winter Mushrooms and Velvet Shank, Flammulina velutipes, a fairly common mushroom around here, usually seen growing on dead Elm trees, as these were. When they get older, their stem becomes very dark at the base and has a velvety hairiness that gives rise to some of the common names. One of its common names, Winter Mushroom, refers to its habit of fruiting even in the middle of winter if you get a thaw that lasts a few days. Michael Kuo, on his excellent MushroomExpert.com site proposes the name "At Least Something's Out in January" Mushroom for it.

If you've ever eaten Enoki/Enokitake mushrooms, then you've eaten this species. Enoki are grown under controlled conditions to produce the typical long, white, stringy-looking mushrooms that pretty much look nothing like this wild, natural form.

hello John
SUPER composition with great sharpness good details and beautiful colours
greeting lou

Hallo John
What an fascinating presentation with just as interesting note. Really spectacular this almost glowing orange fungi. The shape and form is beautiful and reminds me a lot of a handful of balloons. It also has a rubbery appearance, but I am sure if one touches it, it will be soft like a mushroom. I like the full framed composition, the great focus and the beautiful presentation. Thanks for sharing this fascinating subject. Best regards.

Super shot John,
The lighting is perfect as it brings out the beautiful detail and texture of this cluster of mushrooms. They seem to have an almost waxy appearance to them. Great use of aperture to obtain such a nice DOF. Well done as always!!
