Frozen River

The drape of the ice surface suggest that glaciation had to be very intense and sudden: one has the impression that the movement of water and the ripples in contact with obstacles have been frozen in a few seconds.

The water of this stream is of very high purity and of
beautiful clarity: the photograph is clear to the bottom of the river and we can be distinguish autommne sheets resting on the river bed.

The freezing of water seems to have changed the index of refraction: unlike the usual, light rays are only slightly deflected at the interface between air and water. The branches remain almost straight instead of being "broken" as this is in normal times.

Photography

The photograph was taken in mid December, for an afternoon very cold. The sun was not very intense. The camera has been set on aperture priority. With a sensitivity equivalent to ISO-200, I chose an aperture of F / 5 (low luminosity). The speed was 1 / 50.

Variant

In the workshop, I posted the same image, a retired black and white. Thank you for your opinion.

Hi Phillppe,
this is a very fine looking photo of the ice, a subject that is interesting in it's own right.Your note says the water is very clear and clean, well that most certainly is the case here as this well detailed shot attests too.The f-stop you used does allow more light in but at the expense of greater sharpness, but with the lens stopped down even more the details will become much more and a lower iso can be used as well, but only with a tripod. The photo looks good overall with the best bit being the area near the top right hand side, it is just so sharp and crisp and the way the ice has formed reminds me of antique glass for some reason, very nice indeed.Thank you for sharing and keep them coming as I really enjoy photos of ice, snow and frost as the cold time of year has a beauty of it's own.The workshop version has great eye appeal was well.

Cher Philippe

Passe u bon dimanche
