| This is the New Zealand wood pidgeon, a large bird approx 3 times the size of a European pidgeon, and somewhat more imposing in presence and demeanour, not to mention colour. The Maori name is Kereru, hence the title. They used to be a valued part of the Maori's diet but these days are totally protected. As the name suggests they live mostly in the forest, and so do I which makes us neighbours. I shot this from my front door. The bird is perched on a hollowed out log filled with sugar water, a favourite drink of theirs. This one was co operative enough to sit for a good 15 minutes, in various poses, while I took photos from a distance of about 5 meters. This is the first in a sequence of 3. |

Hallo Alex
Welcome to Trek Nature and I hope that you have a fruitful and enjoying journey. You entered the site with a lovely image of a wood pigeon. The variation of colours on the birds plumage is really beautiful and a joy to look at. I personally feel that pigeons and doves have a purity that surrounds them and looking at this pigeon with its white breast feathers I want to agree to my own statement once again. I like the side view in which you photographed the bird, this way showing us a full profile as well as details like the size and posture. I like the colours of the plumage very much as it contains one two of my favourite colours namely purple and jade, and therefore added your posting to my theme "My purple obsession" where it rightfully belongs. Thanks for sharing and trusting to see more images from your lens soon. Best regards.
Anna

Hi Alex
Nice photo. You have done a great job here. The exposure is spot on. The background really compliments the shot. You have managed to show the plumage details clearly. I love the way these birds sit gracefully to allow nice shots. Congrats!
