An adult male gelada monkey (Theropithecus gelada) stands atopa rock near a group of his peers. Geladas, often inappropriately called baboons (should be restricted to the genus Papio), are the last extant species of its genus, Theropithecus, that was once the dominant primate genus on the planet. These monkeys have survived while their close relatives have not by specializing to the high altitude Afro-alpine grasslands of Ethiopia, the only country where they are found. They are herbivorous and eat mostly grass and herbs. Geladas have a complex social system and are among the chattiest primates on the planet, humans excluded.

The long term prospects for geladas are not great, mostly due to human population expansion and habitat loss. Because they live at high altitude (this picture was taken around 3,500m), populations are being effectively isolated in small islands of remaining suitable habitat. Even these patches of quality habitat may not be long to last with continued human population growth and the threat of climate change induced vegetation shifts.
