This is a close up of an eye of the Eurasian eagle owl (Bubo bubo.
Eagle owls are the largest night-owl species in Israel. There are two subspecies in Israel one in the northern part and one in the southern part. The eagle owls mate for life and are territorial. Each pair has a territory of about 12 square Km. They are nocturnal and have a verity of different calls the most popular off which sound a bit like their Latin name (Bubo bubo). They prefer to find their food in fairly open habitats and will feed on small mammals (rodents, hares hedgehogs), birds (even small birds of pray) amphibians and fish.
They nest on cliff ledges, the female will incubate 2-3 eggs and the male will bring her food. After 34-36 days the eggs will hatch, and the blind dawn covered hatchlings come to the world. After several months they are completely independent.
The Eurasian eagle owl is extinct from many locations in Western Europe and has been reintroduced to Germany & Sweden. In Israel Eagle owls are threatened by human activities mainly due to habitat loss and secondary poisoning.

This is an impressive shot! It has a lot of impact to see the owl so close, I like the detail just of the face and one eye. Unusual composition that looks really great. I would have liked a little more info on the bird itself, but the photo is very interesting.

Hey Uri,

Nice shot. This is a very different perspective, but I like it

Very interesting view of a very fierce looking owl. I assume this is a captive owl. I like that you have included a detailed description of his habits and life cycle.
