BLACK BACKED GULL
Larus dominicanus
Maori name: Karoro
The Southern Black-Backed Gull Karora (Larus dominicanus)
is the largest of the three gull species that live in New Zealand. Black Backed Gulls live in all parts of the country from high country river basins to the urban refuse tip. Unmistakable in its colouring of a black back on a white body, the Black-Backed Gull is occasionally confused with albatross by excited tourists. In windy conditions this bird will glide which adds to the confusion.

The Black–Backed Gull has adapted well to human intervention over the centuries, from taking advantage of an abundant supply of insects and small animals off pasturelands, scavenging off refuse tips in the urban environment and foraging along the coastal front.

The Black-Backed Gull is a circumpolar navigator, living in and around the coasts of South America, South Africa, south-east Australia and New Zealand. Being a scavenger by nature, the Black–Backed Gull lives and breeds in a multitude of places, from rocky ledges to open areas of pasture.

This one here looks like it might be a 2-year old Juvenile as his breast and neck are white flecked with brown.

I’ve been wondering whether to post this or not, as the tip of the wing is touching the frame, and the sun is giving his body a bit of a whitening, but it was so hard to capture a better shot I thought “Why not?” So enjoy the best-yet of my in-flight shots. I know I’ll just have to get out there and try again!

Hi janice,

Looking up to the sky again.
Great shot while he is looking down.
P.s. I bought 3 more books but it is still hard to find everything.
So keep on supporting the old man.

Best regards,

Hendrik

Hey Janice,

Very nice shot. This old boy wasn't too worried about approaching you. This is a really nice shot. Thanks.

I tried a little workshop on the image, I hope you like it.

Very nice pose. It is hard to capture flying birds but you did it very well Janice! Great looking NZ's blue sky, nice light. Pity about cut off wing but this is minor nit.

Hi Janice,
Nice shot. I like your composition. Nice back ground.
I quite like the way the clouds have framed the bottom of the photo.
:)

Hi Janice

Wow... this is great! Never mind the wing going into the frame. Excellent POV, good sharpness and detail. Congrats!

Details:3
Exposure:2, wings are too dark, booty is OE

Janice, what a great capture.

I like composition and pov a lot.

Great details in this very beautiful image with a nice contrast.

Sometimes, I have doubt whether posting or not something, but you can be sure this shot is worthwhile posting.

Congratulations.

It is still much, much ... better than the photos of birds in flight I have ;)
Begining are always hard and I think this was very good try.

Hi Janice, well done for this in-flight shot. In-flights are always difficult and praise is due for capturing it. The details are great. There is a little OE part on the rear but this is a difficult exposure. It's bad luck that the shadow of the wing was across his face and that the wing-tip is just creeping out. I do understand the challenges of a photo like this and overall I think it's a very good shot. Well done.

Janice,
Excellent shot for your first flight shot. I took alot of these on my vacation, and I was not happy with them. You have got this one pretty good.

Hi there. I like it. i know that it isn't easy to get these shots, and sometimes everything happens in a second, and you dont always have time to think about compo or anything. you just hope that it looks OK. yes, it is a bit dark under the wing, and yes, the wing is clipped a little bit, but the effort should be rewarded. How far were you from it, and how did you get this shot? that is what i would like to know.

Regards
Elize
