Caelifera is a suborder of herbivorous insects of the order Orthoptera, commonly called grasshoppers in English, the sub-order includes short-horned grasshoppers, grasshoppers and locusts.
The Caelifera have antennae that are shorter than the body, and short ovipositors. Those species that make easily heard noises usually do so by rubbing the hind femurs against the forewings or abdomen, or by snapping the wings in flight. Tympana, if present, are on the sides of the first abdominal segment. The front femora are long and strong, fitted for leaping. Generally they are winged, but hind wings are membranous while front wings (tegmina) are coriaceous and unfitted for flying. Females are normally larger than males, with short ovipositors.
They are easily confused with the other sub-order of Orthoptera, Ensifera. In fact up to few years ago both sub-orders were classified together in the order of Orthoptera, but are different in many aspects, such as the number of segments in their antennae and ovipositor. Ensiferans, have antennae with at least 30 segments, and caeliferans have less. In evolutionary terms, the split between the Caelifera and the Ensifera is not more recent than the Permo-Triassic boundary (Zeuner 1939).
Taxonomically, Borror and White (1970) note that the hind femora are usually enlarged, tarsi have three segments or less, antennae are relatively short, tympana are usually present on the sides fo the first abdomenal segment, and the ovipositor is short. Taxonomic descriptions of the families are more specific.

Hey Nedim. After you've worked so hard to write such a good note,I almost hate to tell you that I think this is not a grasshopper but a strange kind of Praying Mantis.
It is very different from most mantis I have seen, but I'm pretty sure it is a Mantis nonetheless. You may be able to find out which type by typing Mantis into Google and searching 'Images'
Its a very good shot though.Slightly bright on the body, but well composed.Hope you find the species.
Steve.

Hi, yes indeed it's a member of Mantodea order. Family Mantidae, genus Ameles. I'm not sure about the species, could be A. decolor or A. spalanziana :-) Hope it helps :-)

Hello, Nedim. Now, a macro. Great.

There seems to be some dust spots on the CCD of your camera, or, maybe, on the lens. I may be wrong, but I guess you should check it. Your picture has some spots that seem caused by dust.

As for the picture itself, I do enjoy it. An excellent composition, an excellent pov. Sharpness is great too. Great lighting and blurred background.

Congratulations.

Hello Nedim,
This is a nice mantid species. I loved the warm tones all over the picture. The BG. is a bit crowded but a nice possibility to have an idea about it's habitat.
Well done.

Hello Nedim,

You made a great picture here.
Not just the hopper but including the red and the brench it makes a very interesting shot.

Well done,

Hendrik

Fabulous capture of this strangely pale praying mantis. The dried berries it is sitting on are nice because they add a spot of color.

What a strange creature? Very nice picture showing it in its natural habitat. I like the composition, the focus and DOF is good.

You've certainly captured him well, I can never find a grasshopper that sits still for even the second it takes to snap a photo. Well captured, I love the almost monochromatic photo, with the small blaze of color of the plant he's sitting on. Very clear, sharp, nicely lighted photo, well done.
