[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This hawk hit a window and was knocked silly for about 2 hours. Then it slowly got back on it's feet and flew away.

This is a European (or Eurasian) Sparrowhawk. The horizontal banding on the chest, the yellow eye, yellowish-orange legs and grey-rufous crown (which can become quite reddish in some individuals), along with the overall shape suggest this. They, as the name suggests, primarily prey on birds (anything from sparrow to doves, which are near their size) and it is not unusual for one to hit a window when pursuing a meal. European Sparrow hawks belong to the group called the accipiters and are closely related to the Sharp-shinned and Cooper's Hawks of North America. They too are bird eaters and fly fast to try to surprise and chase small birds.

It is NOT related closely to the so-called American Sparrowhawk, which is an outdated name for the American Kestrel (which is a cousin of the European Kestrel) and has quite a different form and hunting style.

Sad story Jens...
Good catch, if he was knocked out you could have take a photo of his eye:)
Nice photo, the colors are a little faded in this picture...

WellDone!

Nice shot! Focus and DOF are spot on, exposure is marginally over, but not too bad. If this were my shot there are a couple of things I'd consider doing though, firstly run AutoColor to fix the slight blue/cyan colour cast, secondly crop out the ?doorframe? in the bottom right hand corner. Glad to hear the Sparrowhawk made a full recovery :) A good capture, and a good note too, thanks for sharing!

Welcome to TrekNature :)

I'm so glad this story had a happy ending. Your title told me it was OK to read the note. Welcome to TN!! Good capture, thanks for sharing.

HI Jens,
Nice to here the bird flew off. I would have been great to get up really close while he was knocked out.
Thanks for the informative note.
:)

Great capture, especially as the bird was ok in the end, Jens.

Interesting tale, great details, good colors and lighting.

Well done, and welcome to TN!

TFS.
