This guy has just finished preening and was still all puffed up. The shot was taken at Lake Rotoiti Nelson Lakes. The walks around this area are breathtaking. Definity worth the visit. The forest is full of Bellbirds and Tui. The Bellbirds followed us every step of the way. Thanks for looking.

Bellbird (Maori Name: Korimako)

The Bellbird is a honey-eaters. It feeds on nectar, fruit and insects. The Bellbird is important to the forest because it pollinates forest flowers and spread small seeds.

When the bird dives into a flower to reach the nectar, pollen sticks to its head. Then the bird flies to another flower and pollen brushes of it’s head, onto the sticky stigma. This is the beginning of a seed.

* The Bellbird is endemic to New Zealand.
* The Bellbird rear three or four chicks, and the incubation period is about 14 days. The females do most of the work, building the nest and rearing the chicks, but the males do help sometimes.

Where are you Bellbird...

* They can be seen in town more often when the kowhai trees flower in spring. They drink the sweet nectar from the flower. They also like to feed on the nectar of rewarewa and flax flowers.
* In summer the they will feed in the rata and pohutukawa trees, sipping the nectar from their flowers.
* In Autumn they will find food hanging from the totara and kahikatea trees, eating their fruit
* In winter they feed on the flower nectar of the puriri tree

HI Pam,
Nice shot of the Bell bird and all still fluffed up.
I like your vertical composition.
BG works very well
Nice crisp Focus.

If only we could attach a sound file to go with the picture :(
Well done
:)

Hello Pam:
You have done it again. Beautifully composed, crisply sharp, a perfectly blurred background, and the bellbird is looking at one right in the eye. Superb.
Am visiting NZ in November. Will put Nelson Lakes National Park on the list of places to visit.
John

So this little fatty is a bellbird... He is nice and fluffy Pam, you caught him at the right time. They sing so beautifully too. Great capture, thank you.

Rotoiti is a beautiful lake, we walked around part of it when we stayed in Nelson in the last century. (January)

Hi Pam, I do not have the time to write a decent comment. I give to you the well deserved smiley.
