Photo taken in Tommy Thompson Park, a man-made peninsula that extends five kilometres into Lake Ontario
I was standing at the edge of the lake, when on the right I saw this beaver swimming parallel to the shore about fifteen feet away. When it passed just in front of me, it made a 90 degree turn and proceeded to swim directly towards me. Three feet from where I was, it raised its head out of the water, looked at me, then turned back and swam away without haste. This photo was a quick snap with no time to fuss with settings.
NOTE REGARDING WORKSHOP
After this first encounter, I went back to the same spot. This time, there was a couple of beavers. They did not seem to mind presence. They circled around for a while, came within a couple of feet of the shore and started to… “neck”. I had seen horses being affectionate toward each other but never beavers. After a while, they swam away side by side to the other shore. Although the light was rather dim, I had managed to snap a few photos without adjusting the camera, the workshop is one of them. Its quality and it artistical merit are not great, but if you have never seen a photo of beavers necking, I think it is worth a look. |

Hello Daniel!
Very nice and interesting capture.Lighting,POV,colors, eye contact and composition are wonderful.TFS...:-)
Hi Daniel. You were very fortunate to have this opportunity in the wild. I have seen beaver in Northern Ontario many times, but they have always been very timid and slapped their tails and fled (dove) at my approach. I really enjoy the composition of the shot and the note helps to understand the obvious curiosity of this fellow.
After 11 yeasrs in Florida I will be moving back to Ontario in a few weeks. It will be good to be home again, and I look forward to the photo opportunities there.
Daniel,
These guys must have plenty to eat! From what I can see he/she is pretty fat. It is good to know that they are well taking care of. Maybe they are a little to friendly :). Excellent DOV and POV.
