One of thousands of animals on the endangered species list is the Florida manatee, or Trichechus manatus. This manatee species can be found in the tropical and subtropical waters off the southern coast of the United States. Their populations were large until the 1930s and 1940s when manatees were killed for their hides and shipped to Brazil and other countries around the world.
More recently, the manatee has encountered new threats: pollution, loss of habitat, and excessive recreational use by humans of their water environment. Manatees are slow-moving animals and are easily caught by the props of high speed boats. If this does not kill them, it injures and weakens them. Thus their population has been in dramatic decline.

Hi Greg, I seem to remember that these mammals were considered to be the fabled Mermaids of long ago. They are so gentle and slow, and also called Sea Cows.
Lovely shot of this one, the water colours make it easy to see her floating along so effortlessly. Good shot and thank you for showing her to us.
Hi Greg,
Very good shot on this Manatee. You did an excellent job shooting thru the glass, getting such a good exposure. Brings back good memories of diving with them in Florida.
