Got this guy walking up in the woods behind our family's cabin in northern BC this summer. The bright orange colour was so obvious against the green background. I had actually spent the first hour of the walk trying to take pictures of the butterflies in the sun. They were just too active.
I would love to know what kind this is. I love the eyes and antennae. I would also like to know what you think of it. Is it cropped too closely? Too much USM?

This is a species of small skipper Chris. You have very sharp details, great color, light, and I like the pose here as the skipper clutches the blade of grass. The composition & crop is fine IMO for a closeup shot like this..What ISO? I might've broken-off my POV to the side here to include more of the beautiful wing patterns. Well done.
the body and head of this skipper of some sort are particularly well seen and detailed in this typical resting pose withits feet round the stem. It would of been nice to have the wings also in focus , but it still works with this limited DOF. TFS

Hi Chris,
Excellent shot and well composed.
I agree with Howard on the POV. A sideview would have been nice. On this on F18 or more to get the wings in DOF. Manual focus as well.
Excellent work.
Mike
Nice composition, nice POV. Not easy to have a good DOF with a close-up view...
I tried a WS to improve your picture ...

Cool animal, very shaggy moth... one could call it Barbarossa like the famous pirate (Red Beard)...
This is Carterocephalus palaemon / Chequered Skipper / Gelbwürfeliger Dickkopffalter / L'Hespérie du brome ou Echiquier / Bont dikkopje.
DOF could be better. Nice picture!
