Turdus merula, Eurasian or Common Blackbird. I came across this noisy fellow just outside my door when heading home one afternoon. It was making quite a lot of to-do, jumping about and making loads of noise (in fact, I'm surprised it has its bill closed in this photo, I must have used a faster shutter than I thought ;-))

The all-black male with his bright yellow bill and eye ring is unmistakable and recogniseable, even at a distance, by the way it moves and especially by the way it raises is tail on landing. First year males have more brown in plumage and brownish bill. The female is distinctively dark brown all over with only obscure streaking on the breast. Approximately 10 inches (25cm) long. Breeds and winters in woods, farmland, gardens, wasteground and hedges. The nest which nowadays may be located almost anywhere, is made of twigs leaves and moss bound with saliva and the well is lined with fine dry blades of grass and leaves and sometimes with feathers. The blackbird nests two or three times a year with the first clutch appearing around March or April with four to six eggs. The female incubates the eggs for 12-14 days, occasionally relieved by the male. The young are fed by both parents for the two weeks they are in the nest and for a further two weeks after they are fledged. Recorded diet is mainly insects, earthworms and a wide variety of fruits both wild and cultivated. An abundant resident throughout Denmark all year round.

I'm not sure whether this one is male or female, I think it's a youngster from this year on account of the brown inner part of the bill and the white flecks on the feathers under the chin and on the upper breast.
Treatment: Crop, saturation +10, USM and resize.

Hi bente just found this believe it or not as a random orphan photo ;0))) not for long me thinks. one very alert cock bird out of breeding colours lost his bright yellow beak and glossy blackness.
I am sure Callie will say something about the use of flash to light under his tail.the rest of him is very well seen. the note too is just what we where expecting to see here on TN thanks for sharing him with us all.

So proud and full of controll over his area. Excellent shot but I cannot figure were he is sitting - is it on one of the poles down to the sidewalks?. I keep saying he because I am sure it is a youngster (the females beak is always grey/brown). - Wonderfull background and lots of details and very informative note.

Je constate que le système AF de votre Canon fonctionne parfaitement bien alors qu'avec le mien j'ai des problèmes de netteté.
Pas de chance pour moi.
Mais je vous dit sincèrement que j'apprécie votre travail.

I note that system AF of your Camera functions perfectly well whereas with mine I have problems of clearness. No chance for me. But I say to you sincerely that I appreciate your work.

Hi dear Bente!

An interesting pose he/she had for you, maybe she ready for take-off,this pose that you captured helps the composition here not be simple, with diagonal lines in framework.

Although the sky has a beautiful blue tone(real) & it's flat as a background but I think it has a fine & great contrast with the bird & makes the bird become tangible more.
The details are admirable & very nice.

Very well done for great capturing you did,Bente!
Respectfully

Bente, Very nice pose, good texture in the plumage. Everything here is tops. Do you want to start a Thrush Theme? I have some that I want to pose, and your blackbird is much better than mine. I have another Europeen soecies too, and three SA species.

I like this.
Its sharp and good exposure.
Well done

Bente! this is very good indeed. The bird's image is sharp and crisp and the dark brown tones are superb against the blue sky. Also very good to capture the pose.

A real beauty, Bente, with lovely details on the plumage that looks so soft and fluffy at the edges. Great posing too, with the tail pointing towards the upper left corner and the alert-looking sparkling eye. Very nice catch and wow what a note.

Just perfectly framed against that bright blue air... And so close that we can admire every tiny little detail.
Very well done Bente!

What a beautiful bird. I like the ballance between the head and the tail, the sharpness, and the nice contrast of colors - black and sky-blue. Well done, Bente.

Just a common blackbird, but this one is so beautiful sharp and I like the composition.
I think, you're doing very well on this new site, Bente, with all your animals !

This is a very good sharp image. The details are amazing on the eye and beak. Also the sky is very smooth, and really makes for a good backdrop for this bird.
One of my favourites, Bente. Thanks.

Bente, great shot. To me, the bird has a funny pose. Colors and sharpness are perfect. Good point of view and depth of field.

Congratulations.

I like blue sky. Pretty photo.

Very lively pose, exactly as they behave. I like above all the superb black to brown/grey color palette, showing the feathers with a lot of rich shades. Light and exposure are spot on.
