Neogobius gymnotrachelus (Kessler, 1857) - racer goby

Today, let me introduce a species I do some studies on.

Racer goby is one of the many gobiid species that live in the drainage basins of the Black and Caspian seas. Recently, some of the species has invaded western Europe, partially due to the river transport and, partially, to interconnecting the rivers by articial channels.

This species was found first in the Baltic drainage area in 1995 in the Bug River. Soon after, in 2000 we have found it in the biggest Baltic River - the Vistula. Now it has conquered almost the entire middle and lower run of that waterbody. The population of the racer goby is very big and stable. The species vividly reproduce, enhancing the fitness by protecting the spawn. The goby eats almost anything that may fit its mouth, even as harsh food as snails and bivalves - food that is usually neglected by other fish.

The species is not very big, it grows up to some 20 cm but due to its enormous flexibility it is among the most successful aquatic invaders in Europe.

My work upon this fish focuses mainly on its distribution and feeding habits.

Wooow ! What a wonderful and interesting portrait that you have very well done ! Great point of view. I also appreciate the complementary note... Congratulations Michal and thanks for sharing.

We have a few of this fellas in my country; it's Danube's river system that all flows in Black Sea. We call them "porcuşori" - that mean little pigs (maybe because of their face). I never had the ocasion to "look them in the eyes" like I do now in your picture. Also, thanks for note.

Ta buzka robi dosc niesamowite wrazenie.

Wlasnie wrocilem z terenu i nawet udalo sie nie zmoknac ;) Za to teraz leje jak z cebra wiec i "wodna" fotka na tapecie ;)
Bardzo fajny portrecik z super szczegolami! Moze troche lepsza glebia by sie przydala by np. chwycic pletwy, ale z drugiej strony zrobienie fotki przez szybe akwarium proste nie jest.
Ciekawa notka duzo wnoszaca :)
