I always feel sorry for cicadas ... especially little guys like this one. Instead of coming out to find a mate when all the other cicada appear (once every seven years), this guy came out after just five years. This is the shell of his skin that he left when he went flying away ... alone, forsaken and far too early for the party he was supposed to attend.

Hi Steve,
I like this shot, as it has a creepy feel to it with the blue/black BG and the dark bark to present this interesting critter, or its "shell" at least. Good detail in the shell and I like the overall composition with the diagonal treestem. I wonder how it would look if you moved closer in (crop more), maybe it would be more dramatic?

Nice sharp shot, I like it. It's probably not one of the 17 Year Cicadas though, we have non-periodic species that emerge every year, so it was probably one of them.
