[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is the largest living bird on the earth today, which is a pity, since the extinct Elephant Bird and Moa from New Zeeland would make mincemeat of this fellow. At 2m in height & weighing in @ ± 85 kg, the Ostrich,
Struthio camelus is indeed a big fellow; & just look at the dainty way in which she stamps her toe, like a matador, turning & I can hear a distinct Olè in the back ground! This is a female, & before you wonder about the bright colours, the soil in our area is VERY red – much iron oxide in the soil & everything is covered in a patina of red - this actually make for nice, unusual colours! She was showing her displeasure at an animal neighbour, hence the little tap dance to get out of the way. Being winter, the animals get supplementary green feeding, lucerne, a green plant with little purple-blue flowers. I can remember eating these flowers as a child. Tomorrow I will post a mug shot of the male, & some more info too. Taken in the Lion & Rhino Park in Muldersdrift.
Nikon D70 & Sigma 120-300 f2.8 & 2X converter @ 300 mm; ISO 200, -0,7 EV; 1/500 @ f8; i-TTL off camera flash; Bean bag on window; bit of cropping, Levels lighter; reduced to size and USM, faded to overlay to suit. Enjoy.

I like your explanation for the red on this Ostrich. When I shoot in the Lion and Rhine, The lions are red, the Rhinos are red, the Eland are red , Zebra are red EVERYTHING is RED!! I have one hell of a time adjusting tones to compensate for this. This is a lovely shot of this Ostridge (The plumage is so black, I thought it was a male) - Lovely Shot.

Yes, the posture of the ostrich is indeed reminiscent of ballet dancing ;-) Great capture Callie that well shows the voluminous expansion of this unique bird, and indeed a look that seems to suggest displeasure. Excellent color and light in this one, really nice.

Nice one Callie nice piece of action well captured. like the note about the local geological effects.

He he, when i was in South Africa, i took a picture of an Ostrich...then i came back hoem and developed my photos...when i looked at them i was wondering...what is my collegue Eva doign in the bushes hehe. Need i say that the photo was NO GOOD he he. I'll blame the fact that i had to borrow the camera and that it was the only camera i had held in my hands for about 10 years. I think i have learnbed since then, i am stilll learning and one day, i hoep to take an equally splendid picture of thsi magificant bird. ;) Sorry about the rambeilng, just came to think of that and it made me smile a bit here in the midle of the night.

The shot is great.Teh feathers are wll excanturared but he head is a bit out of focus. It is moving so it isn't very strange that it is. Woudl a smaller apparature help maybe? Just great Callie. :-D

Good composition, Callie. I like the four layers of colour, which contrast nicely with the Ostrich. Excellent detail. Well captured.

She surely is a beauty Callie. Very nice composition which gives her some space to move into. The colours are very nice - I never noticed that the feathers on the wings were coloured. I love her pose too.

I like the way you have offset the bird to the right and left some space to the left to give an idea of natural surroundings.
