NOTE: all these pictures are approximately 3-4 millimetres high and 4-5 millimetres long.

Today another pack of 'monsters' from my aquarium. It is full of live as always makes great contrast to empty and frozen world in winter. Every day I discovery something new. For example yesterday I saw for first time big colony of protozoans - one of most beautifull creatures in our waters - expect photos soon.

1) Cloeon dipterum - or similiar specie. Close up on front part of body. Not very high quality, but with reversed lens you need load of light so this photo was taken with long exposure time - about 1 second. Blurred areas on right side - external branchia.

2) Mesocyclops sp. - well known for every aquarium enthusisast. Very common animal in freshwaters, it lives in different zones of ponds or lakes. This one has got two sacks with eggs, so we can expect new cyclops very soon ;-) Lenght - about 1mm.

3) Daphnia magna (?) - it is rather hard to ID Dapniae - they're very small and change its shape during seasons. Also very common in all our ponds or even water holes. Black oval shapes are eggs.

4) Mochlonyx sp. - I'm really glad with this picture. Phantom Midge Larva was motionless longer than second so I could take sharp picture. They're dangerous predators and can easily eat 2) and 3). On this picture you can see something which is similiar in shape kidney ;-) - this is space inside larva body contains gas which helps this animal to float in water. Phantom Midge Larva has got two of these 'tanks' filled with gas. It is something similiar to hardware in submarines. I don't know English words for this system - maybe 'ballast tanks'?

Ok, I hope you're not bored with my aquarium ;-) Sorry for low quality this time, but I think this creatures are worth presenting even without decent quality of photos.

Technique - reversed Helios lens, f3/f5, exposure time from 1/8 to 1 second.

Greg, you are quite the explorer and this one is ne of my favourite. Wish I had this images in my comunist zoology book in the 5th grade... I admire you for doing such a great job in covering new grounds in TrekNature

Seeing the unseen...

No big need for extra high quality this time, due to the gear and condition you're working with. I like the reversed Helios lens ideea. I tried that like 10 years ago, using an old Helios from a Zenith camera. I had a hard time to make a mechanism to fit that on my regular camera ( back then... another old Zenith.) I managed to take some shots with butterfly wing scales. I'll look for it in my library and I'll post it soon.

Regards, Petru

Excellent presentation Greg. I like this series. Well done & TFS!

Pieter

The quality is no so bad my friend. In fact what I miss is a little more light, but the details are very good for the size.
Very nice read too, enjoyed very much the explanation. Thanks veru much for this follow up! Regards, Felipe.

Hi Greg,
I think you doing the right thing, it's better to stay in doors and take the pictures. It's gray, dark and rainy at the moment.
Interesting picture and technique.
Nice presentation and good note,
Well done, my friend.

I'll never be bored with monsters from yours aquarium. It seems I've never actually realized that so many interesting cretures can be found in water. I like these photos and notes very much.
Good to have you here Greg ;)

Hi Greg,
Fascinating stuff from your tank! The macros are great. Seeing things that most people do not know exist. Great job!

Grzegorz, we're no bored at all. Keep on bringing them.

Great images all around. Easy to notice your books are working well.

Keep on bringing the creatures that dwell in your aquarium.

Hi Greg,
I love your shots from your little "pool" at home. The animals are so interesting, special because it's not usual to have them at home ;-)
Most I like the 4. It looks like a little ghost from the movie "Caspar", do you know?
Wonderful work, thank you very much

HI Greg, I like meeting your family, pretty awesome photos really, considering how small they are. Definitely No 4's the best. And I love its name: Phantom Midge Larva - you could make up a story from that name!
Well done, my friend...
Janice

Czesc,
Wspanialy dalszy ciag Twojej podwodnej serii :-)
Z oznaczeniami bylbym ostrozny bo tak bez uprzedniego ukatrupienia to ciezko zwlaszcza z oczlikami, dafniami i muchowkami :-)
Serdecznosci,

PS. 9 grudnia (piatek o 17) bedzie zebranie entomologiczne. Przyszedlbys?

Wonderful and interesting images, with excellent notes Greg.

Thank you for sharing this series with us.

This is great material Greg..ultra tiny. I like the Mochlonyx the best for its sharpness and light, illuminating it from the "inside".
Well done! Thank you.

Impresionantes los bichos que te puedes encontrar en un acuario. Un trabajo muy interesante en general toda la serie. Felicitaciones.
