Thank you Paulo and Nigel for the identification. I compared other pictures of this individual with its wings open with pictures of other Melitea from a book I borrowed today, and I have to agree it is much closer to a didyma, and apparently closest to tyhe morph found in Croatia.

Great colours and details!
I think that the specie is a Melitaea trivia (Denis & Schiffermüller, 1775).
Known as Lesser Spotted Fritillary in english.
Rare in Portugal.

I wouldn't be too certain of the species - It's certainly a Melitaea species, but it's closer to didyma than trivia (the black crescents outside the outer orange band on the hindwing do not "capture" the spots). However, I'm not certain that either species occurs in the Lebanon. The shot would have benefited from a little more DOF and a less tight crop but this sort of photograph is not easy to take with a compact camera.
