This image was taken on the Fox Glacier.
The Kea is the worlds only Alpine Parrot and has a reputation for having a rather bold personality. This was no shy creature coming within about 15 feet of our climbing party.
It was a real pleasure to see this bird in the wild and an even greater pleasure to actually get the opportunity to photograph one standing on the glacial ice. |

An Alpine parrot? Wow! Thats so strange. Nature is full of surprises. The image looks like it has a color cast but I could be wrong (maybe its just the ice). Thanks for sharing!

Hello Nick,
A nice shot of this Kea parrot. Especially that you have caught it at wild!
Very interesting shot and note!
Best greetings,
Michal
Hi Nick,
it's strange to see a parrot in the snow.
Good details and POV. Maybe Khris is right about the colours cast but it happends somtimes when shooting in snow.
Well done.
That is just about the weirdest (read: amazing) thing i've seen: a parrot on a glacier. I've been ice climbing and mountaineerin' 'round the world but the last thing I vould expect to see while I have my crapons strapped would be a parrot! Second unexpected thing I wouldnt expect to see on glacier would be naked strippers serving Bordeaux... OK, ive gone too far... :)
Love your photo, goes to my favourites...
