African Lion

RANGE:
Historical: Northern India, the Middle East and Africa.

Current: South Sahara to South Africa, excluding Congo rain forest belt; NW India (a remnant population only in Gir Forest Sanctuary).

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION:
Length:
Male: Head-body: 8.5 - 10.8 ft.;
Tail length: 2 - 3.3 ft.
Female: Head-body: 8 - 9 ft.;
Tail length: 2 - 3.3 ft.
Height:
Male: 4 ft.
Female: 3.6 ft.
Weight:
Male: 330 - 530 lbs.
Female: 270 - 400 lbs.

Coloration:
Light tawny, with white on abdomen and inner side of legs; back of ears black; mane of male tawny through reddish-brown to black. Coat of immature animals has a rosette pattern which fades as they mature, although vestiges may remain in lower abdomen and legs of adults.

DIET:
Bulk of diet consists of animals weighing 110-1100 lbs. Lions are also opportunistic feeders, known to eat rodents, hares, small birds and reptiles.

BEHAVIOR:
Live in social groups called "prides," which generally consist of 4 -12 related adult females, their offspring and 1 - 6 adult males. Members may be scattered in several groups within a pride's range in groups called "companionships" or "sub prides." Females do most of the hunting. Females and young eat first, followed by males. Hunting may be night or day.

ADAPTATION:
Color blends with habitat. The lion is a typical cat in overall structural adaptations. Extra heavy bone in skull and limbs coupled with team hunting allows the taking of extremely large prey.

BREEDING & GROWTH:
Females can breed several times a year. However, an adult female will produce her next litter when her cubs are about 2 years old. If the entire litter dies, she will mate again soon after death of the last cub. Cubs very small at birth - less than 1% of adult weight. Cubs suckle to about 6 months, but start eating meat at about 3 months of age.

STATUS: The lion is the only "big cat" (the roaring cats) not endangered at this time.

GENERAL INFORMATION:
Females rear their young together and will suckle cubs other than their own. Like many cats, lionesses head-butt in greeting

Hi Alan, I went to see "Narnia" y'day, and I loved it. Aslan came across really well, but not at real as your beautiful fellow here. I love his pose with his head twisting behind. They always seem to be lying down, so tired after doing nothing. Well shown, TFS.
Janice

Hello Alan,
this is an excellent lion portrait and excellent note abut this little cat. ;-)
I like it very much. Great sharpness, details, natural colours and POV. This is a great composition. Thanks for posting Alan.

Not very royal pose of this big lazy lion ;-) I like pose and composition, his face also looks good. Refreshing look for The King, Alan!

This is an excellent capture Alan. The light, color, POV and pose are very good. If you had the time, I might've cloned-out the OOF pole rt. Also, I think this one is asking for a tiny bit of USM IMHO. Well done & Thank You!

Hi Alan,
I love cats - no matter how big or what colour.

Hi Alan,
wonderful and unusual portrait of this lion, emphasizing its soft size. I would suggest to crop or clone that pole (Though it is nice composition-wise, it does not quite fit the mood of this image. Gallows?)
High impact in any case, well done!
Gabi

Great capture of the king of beasts, I like the light on his face.

Well seen, my English friend! I'll let you know the itinerary soon...

Alli

Lovely shot my friend!
It's seems to be quite lazy chap. I love the sweet look of his face.
Picture has lovely colours and very good details. I'll say framing is almost perfect becuase I have feeling it could've been a bit better.
Anyway, I like it. Very well done, again ;)
Have a great end of the weekend!

Hi Alan,
Nice shot on the King! He is looking very casual in this pose. He has really great colors in that fur, and the detail looks good. Nice work!

Alan, maybe, a little bit more of sharpness, but it's just an opinion.

Excellent pov and composition. I like colors. Lovely pose.

He stands out greatly against the bg.

Very well done capture. Very good composition with a beautiful pose of the lion. Sharp and well exposed. Thanks for a great one.

Mario

What a lovely pose you captured here Alan. But he looks sad. Have you noticed that most lions look sad. I wonder why that is or is it simply the shape of the jaw/mouth. Anyway, crisp, clear and sharp. I would love to give him a pat. Nice work my friend. Take care.
