Red Fox
Vulpes vulpes

Description - This small, doglike animal is rusty-red with white underparts, chin and throat. The ears are prominent and the tail is long and bushy with a white tip. Backs of the ears, lower legs and the feet are black. The fox goes through colour phases of black, silver, and mixed.


Distribution - The red fox prefers the edges of forests, tilled fields and near marshes but they can be found on farmland, beaches, prairies, woodlands and both alpine and arctic tundra. They thrive throughout most of British Columbia.


Biology - After a 51-53 day gestation period, up to 10 kits are born. Because of its well-developed sense of hearing, sight, and smell the red fox is an efficient and lethal predator; being an omnivore it eats whatever is available including corn, berries, apples, grasses, birds and mammals. The fox has many enemies including coyote, lynx, and humans. It is also susceptible to rabies.

I took this photo at the Yellow River Game Ranch. It's a great place to meet animals up close and in person. This little guy surprised me as I came around a corner.

An excellent shot on this red fox. Exposure looks great! Beautiful colors in this nice soft light. Detail looks superb. I like the frame filling full body shot. Great direct eye contact.

Very nice. I increased the contrast with just a touch of the midtone slider on the levels histogram in Photoshop. It really made Mr. Fox stand out more against the BG and brought a little more detail in the fur. The stare of the eyes became more intense too. TFS

Very sharp face with good eye contact Alli. Well composed with good light, color and details. I think a slight reduction in highlights would bring in more of the red color to the animals coat..Well done.

Hi Alli, we don't have foxes in NZ, so I am always interested to see them. He's quite a beauty. The colours of his legs look good against his reddish fur, and his eyes are so innocent! Good shot, TFS
