Good Evening

Well I have been away for awhile, I just moved from Virginia to Delaware during the month of December. Just finish getting unpacked and the company has sent me to meetings all over the states. So, figured since I was sitting in a hotel in California with nothing to do I would get a post up.

This shot was taken in Savannah, Georgia two weeks ago while there on a business trip. I was at the Savannah Nature Preserve, I really exciting place. I was running around the marshes getting shots of herons, coots, and other wildlife all the while trying not to step on an alligator! Got a few full frame shots of alligators to show also!

This shot I am extremely pleased with, not so more for the composition, but because this is full frame shot. I cropped about 3% only to help be get the size down for posting purposes. This Heron absolutely had no fear of me and let me get within 70mm of him at one point. This shot I was within 130mm of him. It was so exciting to get that close and take shots at leisure and not have him take of! So, hope you like it, I sure had fun taking it..

Description:

39-52" (99-132 cm). W. 5'10" (1.8 m). A common large, mainly grayish heron with a pale or yellowish bill. Often mistaken for a Sandhill Crane, but flies with its neck folded, not extended like that of a crane. In southern Florida an all-white form, "Great White Heron," differs from Great Egret in being larger, with greenish-yellow rather than black legs.

Habitat:

Lakes, ponds, rivers, and marshes.

Nesting:

3-7 pale greenish-blue eggs placed on a shallow platform of sticks lined with finer material, usually in a tree but sometimes on the ground or concealed in a reedbed. Nests in colonies.

Range:

Breeds locally from coastal Alaska, south-central Canada, and Nova Scotia south to Mexico and West Indies. Winters as far north as southern Alaska, central United States, and southern New England. Also in Galapagos Islands.

A harsh squawk.

A beautiful portrait of this great blue heron in a classic pose.
Very sharp details and well saturated colors.

Itis good to see you back and posting! Outstanding shot on this Great Blue Heron. Great full body shot that fills the frame. Exposure looks great with the nice colors. Detail is very sharp with excellent DOF. I had a similar experience with one of these on Sannibel Island. He let me get very close. This one looks superb!
