Backswimmer (Anisops sp.)

My swimming pool pump broke. So the water turned greenish for the three days I didn't clean it. Also these critters appeared. I was in the pool the afternoon to cool down (37 deg. Cels.) when this one jumped out of the pool. Luckily the camera was nearby. Afterwards I learned that they jump out and fly off, maybe the water started to become to chlorinated again for it?.

Family: Notonectidae
Small sized voracious predators. They orientate with the convex and keel shaped underside facing upwards. They propel using their fringed hind legs. The underside of the body has a groove, they replenish this at intervals with fresh air, thus functioning as a lung. They are very agile in and under the water as well as in the air. They tackle a wide range of prey with their raptorial fore legs, including tadpoles and small fish. Watch out they pinch if handled, I tried to put it back in the water. Ouchh! :(

This one was very small. It's body lenght was about 3mm. There are 22 species in the genus.

Great shot Gerhard, I tried to get pictures of these this year but no luck. I haven't personally been bitten by one of these but I have been reliably informed a bite hurts like hell.

Excellent work.

A very pleasant presentation, Gerhard: 2 panoramic views in a rectangular one. I like it!
It is the summer in South Africa, I have to remind me that (-5 deg. Cels. here this morning).
I like those introductions in your notes, your images speak to me more thus. I hope that your pump will be repaired soon! :)

Oh yes! Great shots.

You have define correct as critter... I remember some personage of film of fiction.
Excellent dobe image to show this insect peculiar.
Very good sharpness with correct DOF in both capture... more consider the size that indicate that have the beast.

Gerhard, you have just introduced me to a creature i have never seen before. Good detail of the various parts of this strange one. Yhank you.

Hi gerhard, We call them Water Boatmen here.
2 nice impromtue shots, nice one.

Gerhard, This is a great shot showing excellent detail in a subject this small! Since the weather here has turned bad I attempted shooting a mosquito larvae of this size with fair results as I was inside using house lights to illuminate. Anyway, I like your results much better. Well done!!

I know this sucker very well. I have got few of it in aquarium in my room [you know - my main hobby is hydrobiology]. Usually its length is about few mm but in park's pond I saw ones 1-2 cm long. Anyway - very good, sharp and clear picture Gerhard. Points tomorrow.

Very well done. Ek hoop die pomp is nou reg want jy neem mooi goed af wanneer jy swem.

The image is sharp and the exposure excellent. I am still amazed with the quality you are achieving! 3mm you say - the water must have been very cold :)

Thanks for posting

This is one of those insects we all see when we are small at the pool, river, etc. but never with detail, just in the water. It is very interesting to see one out of the water with the detail provided by two different POVs. Simple but very original Gerhard.

Aha, food for my favourite fish, the largemouth bass. Good shot Gerhardt, such good details on such a small critter. I'll have to look at another camera and all the goodies that go with it to take these macro shots.Well Done
