From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tigers (Panthera tigris) are mammals of the Felidae family and one of four "big cats" in the Panthera genus. A group of tigers is called an "ambush" or a "streak". They are predatory carnivores and the largest of all living cats. When the ancient Romans set tiger against lion in the coliseum, the tiger invariably won [see PBS].
Most tigers live in forests and grasslands (for which their camouflage is ideally suited). Among the big cats, only the tiger and jaguar are strong swimmers; tigers are often found bathing in ponds, lakes, and rivers. Tigers hunt alone and eat primarily medium-sized herbivores such as deer, wild pigs, and buffalo. However, they will also take larger or smaller prey on occasion. Humans are the tiger's only serious predator and often kill tigers illegally for their fur or penises, which are used as aphrodisiacs in Chinese Medicine rather than for food. Poaching for fur and destruction of habitat have greatly reduced tiger populations in the wild, and it has been placed on the endangered species list.

Physical characteristics
Although different subspecies of tiger have different characteristics, in general male tigers weigh between 150 and 310 kg (330 lbs and 680 lbs) and females between 100 and 160 kg (220 lbs and 350 lbs). The males are between 2.6 and 3.3 metres (8 ft 6 in and 10 ft 9 in) in length, and the females are between 2.3 and 2.75 metres (7 ft 6 in and 9 ft) in length. Of the more common subspecies, Corbetts Tigers are the smallest, and Amur (Siberian) Tigers the largest.

Excellent shot!
Very sharp image with great colours and good details.
Thanks for sharing!

Very good wildlife photo. The colours are good. I like the movement of its paw through the water to make it dynamic. Well done.

wel teunie,
Ik was erbij maar ik moet toegeven dat jij van deze gestreste tijger, die druk aan het heen en weer lopen was. Jij toch de beste foto hebt gemaakt. Goede timing that was a must in this one, and you did it do very good here, good quality, very good job.

Hello Teunie!

Nice to meet you and welcome on TN! Are you Jaap's wife ;-) ?
Beautifull debut - one of most amazing animals in great pose. Tigers are probably one and only big cats which like water. I like its dynamic movement, blurred leg, colours of furr and face. Great job!

good action shot..most zoo animals look lethargic and not quite on the ball
this tiger seems to like the water..

Hello Teunie, and a belated welcome to TN!

A wonderful first posting and great composition.

It is unusual seeing a cat like this in the water, he appears to be in a hurry...

Great details, colors, POV, and exposure.

Well done and thank you for sharing it with us!

Well, I think you have done well here, good colour and movement, mayeb a touch soft in fous on areas, but a great post. TFS

Hallo Teuni,

Hi Teunie,

Beautiful acpture and well done on the composition.

wonderful.Thanks for sharing.

I like the shot of the tiger, and the feel of movement in it is very good

Hello Teunie,
A belated welcome to TN.
Excellent first post.
Good detail, colours and sharpness.
Composition and exposure are good. Good POV and framing.
Thanks for posting, have a good week.
Enjoy TN, I look forward to viewing more of your posts.

That's a lovely picture. Slightly soft in focus, but that doesn't distracting at all. I like the moment captured, POV and framing very much.
WELL DONE!

Nice capture, I love the movement. The only thing I would mention is that you could leave more room on the right, just to allow the tiger some rome to move in the picture.

Thanks for sharing!

Hi Teunie
This is a good shot of the tiger. The composition is great with nice movement. He is causing a great splash in the water and you froze the droplets in mid air.
The exposure and lighting are well done while the colours are great. The DOF is good and the details are sharp throughout.
Very good work and well done. TFS.

Loot

Hi Teruine,

This is our national animal!!! , you have captured it very well, i like the composition, colors and the DOF.

I am one of the unluckiest few who has not seen this animal in the wild even after visiting Bandipur(Karnataka) around 24 times, that talks about their numbers. unless the poaching stops ( mostly for chinese medicine!!! ) . There is no hope for this animal.

Well your tiger is definitely better than mine. Thanks for sharing your picture! Keep posting pictures!

It's nice to see a shot of a tiger that is active. The tigers at my local zoo do nothing but eat and sleep. The action is nicely captured with the motion blur and the look in it's eyes!

Excellent capture of this wonderful image,
great composition with nice scene.
Thanks for sharing!

Good high speed capture to have the clarity of the water frozen. This is a sharp text book like image.

Hi teunie,
A good shot, well composed.Being from the "land of the tiger" and spending a lot of time following wild tigers,I find the colour a bit too yellowish. You may see some of the photos and notes of wild tigers I gave in my gallery.Regarding group, tigers are not seen in groups unless they are mother and cubs.Unlike lions, they are solitary animals. The greatest threat to tigers in India come from Tibet where people give exhorbitant price for its skin.Last year alone more than 300 tiger skins were smuggled out of India.India's hospitality to Tibetan exiles due to Chinese invasion have become the death knell for the tigers, whose last post has aleady been sounded.During the turn of the century India had more than 40,000 tigers and now it is only less than 2000.Sight of a tiger in the wild with all its majesty is a sight no one can forget. Next generation Indians may have to go to zoos like Rotterdam zoo to see the tigers.

Hallo Teunie,

Hello Teunie

Beautiful photo.
Tigers are my lifelong passion.
This is a great photo showing the focus in the tiger's eyes.
He definitely looks interested in something and is moving purposefully through the water.
I really don't like zoos but very soon this will be the only way that people will ever be able to see a living tiger.
Excellent photo and thanks for sharing it with us.

Regards

Roy
