Praying Mantis

This is the South African import Miomantis caffra that is steadily eating our NZ mantids and becoming unwelcome pests in NZ. We are finding that the praying mantis in our gardens is now more often the introduced South African kind and not the native mantis it is displacing. Our native insects are being displaced by new invaders.

Praying mantises are found in most countries world-wide and range from about ¼ -12 inches according to the species. Their colours vary, ranging from light greens to pinks. Most mantids are pea green or brown. The tropical flower mantises, which resemble flowers, are usually light colours such as pink. Flower mantises, from Africa or the Far East, so closely resemble flowers that insects will often land on them to get nectar.

Camouflage is very important for the praying mantis' survival. Because they have so many enemies such as birds, they must blend in with their habitat to avoid being eaten.

They have a triangular-shaped head with a large compound eye on each side. Praying mantids are the only insect that turns its head from side to side in a full 180-degree angle. Their eyes are sensitive to the slightest movement up to 60 feet away. They have straight, leathery forewings and very powerful jaws used for devouring its prey.

Hi Janice,

Hi Janis,
a nice shot of an interesting insect, I saw a similar on my vacation, the first I have ever seen in the flesh but the camera was on the hotel room.
The pose and the POV are good, nice green tones and good details.
Well done, my friend.

Hi Janice
Rather late than never - I've had tremendous problems with my internet provider and I am running on 16Kbps on the moment. Just to upload your photo took the better part of 4½ minutes.
Anyway, I like your curious mantis. It is amazing how these guys can actually watch you while you are busy around them. That head turns around and you can see how they intensely watch your every move.
The composition and colours are great. I have to agree with some of the other critiques, that a smaller aperture would have been beneficial. F/8-10 would have nailed the DOF and provided so much more details. The other problem was the fact that apparently the lighting did not playing along. Probably you would have had to use some fill in flash to accommodate a higher f/stop. The BG is well OOF and it isolated the insect very well.
Good work though and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Excelent macro, Janice! I´ve posted a picture of mantis a few days ago, but I don´t have equipment to get so close and take macros like your. This is fantastic! So I have to compose a little bit more to have any results. This guy is amazingly looking to you, and he looks like an ET! GREAT capture!

Zeca
