An Early Purple Orchid (Orchis mascula) from the woodland around my home.

A previous photo in bud.

There has been a comment that orchids don't ever seem to get o flower in the UK, so here are 2 in full flower (and full sunshine...). Luckily the trees are only just starting to come into leaf, so there are still a few days left of good light to get some wonderful highlights in the petals...

I know the DOP is not quite spot on at the top of the right orchid, but I still like the photo and thought I would post it anyway.

I was out in the woodland about 3 hours ago and there are about 100 orchids in full flower now and many more still to come (and this does not include the 30 or so destroyed by the pheasants during the week).

Maybe tomorrow or early next week, I will post one of the shots taken tonight that show the paler version of this orchid.

Usual info - taken in RAW, mirror lockup, tripod, converetd to jpeg, resized and sharpened. This is full frame and -0.7EV... unsure whether this was with flash fill in or not, have lost exif info somewhere....

Beautiful colours and very good contrast to the BG, I liked the composition.

nice shot emma! if you're referring to my comment on that ceph shot - i meant cephs in general, not the whole of the uk orchidaceae - see my p.s. on that ;) you've captured these two very nicely indeed. you're right a little more dof would have been perfect, but it's barely noticeable at this size. i think if i'd posted this one i'd have added a little more fine detail sharpening, but otherwise it's lovely - colours are spot on, and the background is nice and non-distracting. very well captured :-D

p.s. is that a bluebell in the bottom right corner?
