| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
This Common Blue (Polyommatus icarus) is the most abundant and widely disterbuted of all European Blues. It can be found in all the tempered areas in Europe, North Africa and Asia. In Israel it can be found in the Mediterranean region from March to November.
The male is always blue on the upperside and most of the females are brown with orange stains in the side of the wings. The color of some females is a mixture between the male show and the female show. In the back side, the male has orange stains only in the hind wings while the female has orange stains also in the fore wings.
The butterfly in the picture is a male. For female: see: http://www.treknature.com/gallery/Middle_East/Israel/photo53510.htm
Wing span: 30 - 35 m"m.
Host plants: vetches, clovers, restharrow and other plants from the leguminous family. |
