Great Blue

This shot was a little too spontaneous. I wasn't planning on doing any birding on this outing, but I couldn't resist. This shot happened so fast that it is a touch blurry around the heron's wingtips.
Nonetheless, I was amazed to find a setting that really displayed the "great blue" aspect of a Great Blue Heron. The wingtips almost melt into the background waters, and without the accompanying shadow, most viewers would be hard-pressed to spot the bird at all!
I realize that the bird is a little small for conventional framing. I justify this by arguing that the subject is not the bird so much as it is the bird's relationship to the setting...or more specifically, the color is the subject here. |

I really wish this would be sharp. The idea is great.
