For my friend Loot and his beautiful country : )
I am not sure what kind of protea this is,
but I understand the king protea is the national flower of South Africa.

Protea

The Proteaceae are an ancient family, probably one of the oldest groups of flowering plants. Scientific probes into the early history of plant life have shown that the ancestors of today's Protea were present 300 million years ago. Proteaceae are best represented in South Africa along the south and south western coastal mountain ranges. The other sub-family is located along the south and south western coastal areas of Australia. No genus is naturally common to both South Africa and Australia. There are some 329 known species of Protea in South Africa. The South African species consist of Protea, Leucadendron and Leucospermum for the most part, while the Australian species is the Banksia.

This photograph was taken at the Strybing Arboretum at the Golden Gate Park in San Francisco.

Hi Manyee
Sorry, I don't like proteas. Ha, I bet that made you sit up straight and gasp for air. Was that predictable or did it come as a shocking, disgusting surprise? No, sorry, catch your breath and calm down for I am just pulling your leg. Who in his right mind can ever say they do not like proteas. They are absolutely gorgeous flowers and they are the crown pride and joy of South Africa's floral diversity. Of the ±120 species of proteas 83 are found exclusively in South Africa.

Thank you ManYee, for this wonderful gift. Your kindness is only exceeded by your great friendship.
There is definitively some Greater Hand that controls proceedings in life. For a considerable time I felt like posting a dedication to you (ManYee), but I first had to find the photo that felt 'just right' for this. So, Tuesday night while I was preparing my photo of the Yellow pansy butterfly, I knew that 'it' was the right one. Wednesday afternoon (while still at work) I had a 'quick look' at TN just to see how my previous butterfly was doing. I noticed your "Protea" on the 1st page of the gallery, but I did not open it as I do not want to spend time on the TN site while at work and I just made a mental note to visit it later during the evening. It so happened that I could not logon until the early hours of Thursday morning, when I quickly uploaded my yellow pansy (which I dedicated to you) and then I came here to your photo, just to find that you have dedicated it to me. WOW. I was awestruck to say the least. Coincidence, destiny, or divine providence?
It is a great photo of a beautiful flower. I just love the stunning and complimentary colours of the pink segmented petals and the involucral bracts on the green leaved background. The DOF is spot-on with all the amazing details clearly visible. The composition is enhanced by the close, tight fitting crop and the exposure was well managed.
Very well done and TFS.
Best regards from your grateful friend
Loot

Hi Manyee,
A bit of a late one last night (work not fun!!). Just time for a very quick visit.
Thanks for posting, well worth a big smiley.

Bonjour Manyee
Félicitation pour cette superbe prise en macro de cette splendide fleur .Les détails sont vraiment impressionnants ,on dirait le duvet et le fin plumage d'un oiseau a l'intérieur de la fleur.
Merci et au revoir....JP

Hi Manyee,
beautiful post, the intensive colours really rock with the complementary red-green contrast and the composition works excellently, with the central compo of the circular plant but taken at an angle so that the inside bits are diagonally arranged. Excellent!

Gabi
