Pieris napi – Green Veined White (Pieridae)

Appearance: The upperwing background colour of this fairly small and delicate looking butterfly is white with the veins having a dark scaling. Both sexes have a dark tip to the forewing, although it is more pronounced on the female. Females have two spots whereas males have one. The wingspan varies between 40 and 48 mm.

Geographical distribution/ habitat: Europe through Asia and North America. Prefers fields, meadows and waysides where its host plants can be found.

Host plants: Cruciferous plants, eg. Cresses and Garlic mustard.

Food plants: Visits various flowers for nectar and is not fussy on them. In early summer though it prefers to visit dandelions and in the late summer thistles.

Flight time: Flies from May to October in 2 or 3 generations.

Hello Heinz,
That's very interesting. Last weekend I've seen four White butterflies sitting on dandelions seed heads. I wonder why they do it?
Anyway, the pictrue is superb. Love the vertical framing, dark BG an the simplicity of this picture.
VERY WELL DONE!

Nice POV Heinz
The green BG makes the white beautiful

Hi Heinz!
Both - butterfly and dandelion - look great. White colour and soft, hairy body of insect looks perfect in composition with this old flower. Excellent details. Great job my friend!

Hello Heinz,
Really looks great hangin' off the dandelion this way :) Excellent exposure, detail, color and vertical framing. The OOF green Bg is great as well.
Very nicely done and TFS!

Fantastic detail and the DOF is spot on. Excellent work on the framing and the composition.

Either you are too selective or the luck seems to favour you, Heinz, when you capture your butterflies with the most befitting perches one can ever imagine. For example, this light specimen is glued to a dandelion that matches its colours to perfection.
As for the picture itself, it is the finest ever from you once again.

Hi Heinz
Great composition details and BG
