In the Middle Ages pigeons were kept as food, the production of dung and as a mail service. The introduction of artificial fertilizers ended this and now breeding and flying pigeons is a typical Belgian hobby, especially popular with older people. Belgium and Holland have a huge fraternity of racing pigeons fanciers, many of whom even make a career out of breeding, selling and racing pigeons.
