The bumblebee (also spelled bumble bee) is a flying insect of the genus Bombus in the family Apidae. Like the common honeybee, of which it is a relative, the bumblebee feeds on nectar and gathers pollen to feed its young. These creatures are beneficial to humans and the plant world alike, and tend to be larger and furrier than other members of the bee family. Most, but not all, bumblebee species are gentle.
Bumblebees form colonies, much like honeybees. However, their colonies are usually much less extensive than those of honeybees, because of the small physical size of the nest cavity, the fact that a single female is responsible for the initial construction, and the restriction to a single season. Often, mature bumblebee nests will hold fewer than 50 individuals, and may be within tunnels in the ground made by other animals, or in tussocky grass.

Unlike honeybees, bumblebees only store a few days' worth of food and so are much more vulnerable to food shortages. However, because bumblebees are much more opportunistic feeders than honeybees, these shortages may have less profound effects. Bumblebees mostly do not preserve their nests through the winter, though some tropical species live in their nests for several years (and their colonies can grow quite large, depending on the size of the nest cavity). The last generation of summer includes a number of queens who overwinter separately in protected spots.

Hi Chris
Another great shot from you, with brilliant details and stunning colours showing this bumble bee in a most spectacular shot.
The composition is great with the petals of the flower almost running thru the diagonal and the bee on the right giving good balance to the photo. The totally OOF BG is amazing and it enhances the bee and the flower extremely well. The exposure was spot-on and very well managed.
Great work and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Hello Chris,

Incredible picture of this bumble-bee on a colorful flower! You got the focus right on the whole insect with an excellent dof! Details are very sharp and we can even see some pollen stick on the insect's legs. You got a great pov and made a remarkable composition! I like also the nice blurry bg complimenting the subject. Very great work! TFS
