At last, a fox in the wild! I was all tucked in behind a large wooden gate and tall grasses waiting for warblers to appear among the reeds opposite when I heard this rustling just to my right on the other side of the gate. Lo and behold this young fox (the size is hard to tell from this image but it didn't seem to be full grown) appeared not three feet from me, hurrying down the lane. I muttered some fairly mild expletives cos it was heading away from me rather than towards me but I guess it heard me cos it turned around and gave me the perfect opportunity to grab a shot or three before moving on. I think it was curious, all it could see was long grasses and this huge snouty thing in front of a rather indistinct lump - me! Well it moved on and I sat back to wait some more for those warblers...when I started hearing this most awful racket. Wait, hadn't I seen the fox making its way into the farm and wasn't that noise the sort of noise panicked chickens make? Teenagers are not known just for their curiousity are they? I think this one hit the jackpot.

I don't reckon this one anywhere on the scale of Luc's images which are *so* cute but it's mine and it was really in the wild and so it means something special to me.

I know I've said this is a young fox but I read online that fox cubs are still dependent on their parents until around September. That would make this a very early cub indeed if it is a cub at all. On the other hand I think I remember that the British Wildlife Centre starts to release cubs into the wild much earlier than that. What do you think, is it a youngster or not?

Good shot Hollie! I'll always give two points to a good shot of a wild native mammal :D Hard to say whether he's a youngster or not - as you say it's difficult to gauge the scale here... Looks like it was quite bright outside though? Most of the foxes around here tend to like being out around dusk, so the fact that it was out during the day is unusual. EXIF shows midnight, which it isn't - any idea how the time was reset, or haven't you set your 20D? Undecided as to whether I'd crop the top and some of the right hand side off here - I think the line of grass at the top draws the eye away from our furry friend... Anyway a lovely capture :D

How cool! I too have been trying to get a shot of a fox in the wild, but i only ever see them at night, in the headlights of my truck (on the side of the road, safe)! Well done here! Thanks for sharing!

What a nice animal to look at! And you're picture is very clear. I think it is a youngster, but I only say that because I have a feeling it is a youngster. I am not certain

Anyway a excellent shot!... I am a little envious... ;o)
Here I have never seen such animal's in the wild..

Typically the only time a saw a fox in the wild I didn't have my camara and he sat and stared at me for a while. I could have kicked myself. This is lovely. You were in the right place at the right time and you have taken a wonderful picture

Hi Hollie,
An excellent shot on this Red Fox for having to be a quick grab shot. To me it appears to be a young adult, possibly only a year old or so. It is very hard to tell, but looks a little to mature to have been born this spring. He has not looking for your hen house was he??? Great eye contact. He has locked in on you with this pose.

Hi Hollie,
Lovely shot, I like the way you've framed him in a very alert pose half out of the undergrowth. The blurry vegetation on the right with detail further in works really well. Lovely detail and great light and exposure, a great shot. And a wild one too :-)
Cheers,
Adrian

Hi Hollie,
Fantastic wildlife image! Excellent POV and DOF, great composition, good lighting, sharp and clear details on subject.
Very well done and thanks!

Worthy of 2 points just being able to shoot a fox in the wild! It's got a charm to it as well, the way the fox is unsure about coming out of the long grass - just checking before he does so. And I like the fact that the head is super clear yet the body is not. I think I would have cropped some of the space from the left so that the head is not so centred, but not much.
